Biography

Asa studies medievalisms i.e. interpretations of the medieval period done by modern authors. He obtained his MA degree in medieval studies from the University of New Mexico and now works towards completing his MFA in fiction. His scholarly work focuses on persecution narratives and witchcraft from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. His research is the basis for his creative writing and his creative works generate research questions. Narratives “justifying” the persecution of the Other take root in the early medieval period, flower within works like the Malleus Maleficarum and pollinate within medievalisms i.e. modern narratives, but so too have the seeds of resistance been sown in works like The City of Ladies written by the first author Christine de Pizan. Resistance flowers within the same canon of literature taken up by the would-be oppressor. Asa teaches, and researches narratives from the 500s to 1550. He teaches and researches how medieval narratives are reinterpreted into medievalisms. Magic and esoteric practice as well as beer brewing feature heavily as subject matters within his work.
