The PhD in English
The English program offers four paths to the Doctor of Philosophy degree: American Literary and Cultural Studies, British, Irish, and Global Literary Studies, Medieval Studies, and Rhetoric and Writing.
American Literary and Cultural Studies
A PhD concentration in American Literary and Cultural Studies provides instruction in nineteenth and twentieth century American literature.
British, Irish, and Global Literary Studies
Our concentration in British, Irish, and Global Literary Studies offers focused study in three areas: Early Modern Studies, British and Irish Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Literary Studies, and Modern British Literary Studies.
Medieval Studies
A PhD in English with an emphasis in Medieval Studies provides an excellent interdisciplinary program, with courses in English, History, and Art History, as well as other disciplines throughout campus.
Rhetoric and Writing
A PhD in English with an emphasis in Rhetoric and Writing offers both academic and hands-on experience, with many opportunities to contribute to one of the most dynamic writing programs in the United States.
