Navid Etedali, a PhD student in American Literary Studies at the University of New Mexico, participated in the 2024 Northeast Popular Culture Association (NEPCA) conference at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.
In his presentation, titled, “Narratives of Racial Identity: Exploring Iranian Experiences in the United States,” Etedali explored how Iranian American writers, including Porochista Khakpour, Azar Nafisi, and Leah Mirakhor, engage with thematic universality and racelessness in their writing. He also discussed how and why these authors find James Baldwin’s work to be relevant to their own experiences of race in America.
