Lecturer Publishes Article on Beowulf

Lisa Myers, Term Lecturer and 2015 alumna in Medieval Studies, recently published her article, “The Ruined Landscapes of Beowulf: Apocalypse and Hope” in Studies in Philology. In this article, Dr. Myers examines the influence of the topography of early medieval England upon the landscape settings of the famous English epic, Beowulf, directly connecting prehistoric and Roman archaeological evidence to the poet’s depiction of the lair of the Grendel-kin, the dragon’s barrow and Beowulf’s barrow. Her analysis and application of environmental history reveals the ways in which the poet’s creative use of ruined environments enhances the apocalyptic tone of the epic while also providing some hope for future generations.
