From Partain’s application:

I came to the decision to focus my research topic of interest for our final assignment of the semester; MWA 3: Presentation, on Octavia E. Butler, since she was the author of my favorite book from the selection provided: Parable of the Sower. This assignment was pretty open-ended, our instructor gave us free-range to explore the text in our own way, which at first, I found intimidating. Ultimately however, it allowed me to narrow down my research to topics based on deep personal interest as well as relevance to the class/assignment. This way of researching allowed me to freely explore in depth these topics which I believe impacted and elevated my understanding of Butler’s work and my understanding of the assignment’s learning objectives.
