UNM alumna Michelle Gurule received a notable mention in Harper Collins’ most recent edition of their annual “Best American Essays” series. This series honors the years’ best works in the field of creative nonfiction. Gurule received the mention in the book’s appendix for her essay “Exit Route,” initially written as part of her MFA dissertation and published in issue 53 of the literary magazine StoryQuarterly.
“Exit Route,” which won StoryQuarterly‘s nonfiction prize alongside the notable mention in “Best American Essays,” concerns Gurule’s father and grandmother as well as her attempt to escape her work at the time as a sugar baby.
Gurule is currently in the editing process of the larger memoir, which she hopes to have completed for shopping to publishers in spring 2023.
“Exit Route” can be read on StoryQuarterly‘s website. “The Best American Essays 2022” is available wherever books are sold.
