Medieval Studies Professor Presents Paper at MAP Flash February

Anita Obermeier, Professor of Medieval Studies, presented her paper, “Putative Auto-Antifeminism: Medieval Women Writers as Geniuses,” at the Medieval Association of the Pacific Flash February Online Conference.

She will give a longer version of this paper at the invitation of the UNM 21 Club on April 13th, 2021 at 7 pm. Obermeier will discuss that the genius of women writers in the Middle Ages lies in the fact that they were writing in the first place, as writing was a solidly male domain. Her talk will illustrate how medieval women authors like Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, Hildegard of Bingen, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Christine de Pizan outsmarted church hierarchies to become successful authors who then turned the tables, chastising popes and potentates.
