MFA Student Wins Nonfiction Prize

Third-year MFA student Michelle Gurule recently won first prize in a nonfiction contest held by StoryQuarterly, a respected literary magazine operated by Rutgers University-Camden. Michelle’s essay, “Exit Route,” was selected by contest judge T Kira Madden, whose memoir Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls has been influential to Michelle. “Exit Route,” which is an excerpt from Michelle’s dissertation, is scheduled to be published in StoryQuarterly issue 53 in 2021. Michelle has previously had three essays from her dissertation published in Alien MagazinePangyrus, and Homology Lit.
