UNM Alumnus Taking Poetry Scene by Storm

Benjamin Garcia, UNM alumni, is breaking out as a dynamic professional poet. Having completed a BA in English and Spanish from the University of New Mexico and an MFA from Cornell University. Garcia’s poems have appeared in the Kenyon Review Online, Best New Poets, As/Us, Gulf Coast, The Collagist, and West Branch Wired.

Thrown in the Throat, Benjamin’s first collection, was selected for the 2019 National Poetry Series—a literary awards program sponsoring the annual publication of five books of poetry. This collection was heralded by Lambda Literary as the “Most Anticipated LGBTQ Book” and a “Must-read poetry collection” by The Millions. [Image 2]

Benjamin currently works for a nonprofit organization as a Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Educator providing HIV/STD and opioid overdose prevention education to higher-risk communities of New York’s Finger Lakes region.
