Joy Harjo, a former UNM faculty member in the Department of English Language & Literature and critically acclaimed poet has become the new United States Poet Laureate. Harjo is member of the Muscogee Creek Nation and the 23rd Poet Laureate – the first Native American to hold this position. In her new position, Harjo is tasked with raising the national awareness of poetry and cultivating an appreciation for poetry through reading and writing. In addition, she will open the literary season in the fall and close it in the spring.
