2018-19 Hillerman-McGarrity Scholars Faerl Marie Torres (MFA 2018) and Alice Yang (BA English, Magna cum Laude) met with New Mexico novelist Michael McGarrity at his most recent book launch in Santa Fe.

The Hillerman-McGarrity Scholarship has been generously endowed by two beloved New Mexico novelists, Michael McGarrity and the late Tony HIllerman, to foster the growth of creative writing in our state. It is awarded annually to as many as four graduate and undergraduate creative writers who have made New Mexico their home and/or integrated the southwest thematically into their work. Pictured here are two of last year’s Scholars, Undergraduate Alice Yang who was awarded magna cum laude for her honors thesis, a collection of short stories set in Albuquerque and featuring an ethnically and culturally diverse cast of characters, and recent MFA graduate Faerl Marie Torres’ for her dissertation, a novella and stories, one of which. “Peeling Doves,” won the Gertrude Stein Award from the Dr. T. J. Eckleburg Review. Not pictured is third-year MFA student Tori Cardenas, whose stories and poems masterfully employ and subvert the tropes of genre and, in so doing, expand readers’ awareness of the multiplicity of human experience.

Congratulations to all and our gratitude, as always, to Michael McGarrity!
