The English Department is pleased to recognize incoming American Literary Studies doctoral student, Madeline Rose Mendoza, who is the recipient of a New Mexico Higher Education Department Scholarship.
The NMHED Scholarship was created by the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education to increase graduate enrollment of underrepresented groups at public post-secondary institutions.
Madeline Rose Mendoza (Laguna Pueblo/Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo/Xicana) is a first-generation PhD student in American Literary Studies from Rio Rancho, New Mexico. She is a former English teacher, a newly published poet, and a recent graduate from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. Madeline holds a BA in both English and Psychology and an MA in Native American Studies with a specialization in Indigenous Futurisms. Her research interests include Indigenous Literary and Critical Theory, Indigenous Feminisms, Indigenous Women Writers, Postcolonial Theory, Literature as Resistance, Literature and Identity, Rhetorical Sovereignty, Decolonial Imaginings, Indigenous Wonderworks and Futurisms. As she enters the American Literary Studies program in the English Department, Madeline is eager to gain more experience as a teaching assistant and a scholar of Indigenous Literatures. She is also pursuing a certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and hopes to develop her work on Indigenous Feminisms and Futurisms. Madeline aspires to contribute to the world of Indigenous Futurisms, with the goal of teaching Native American and Indigenous Literatures at the college level and with a focus on her research interests. Her faculty advisor is Dr. Melina Vizcaino-Alemán.
