Visiting Irish poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin read from her debut collection Bloodroot (Doire Press, 2017) in the Frank Waters Room of Zimmerman Library on Friday, February 22. Dedicated to the poet’s foremothers, especially her grandmother who gave birth in an Irish Mother and Baby Home during the 1950s, the collection of poems explores the buried histories of violence and silencing imposed upon women by the Irish state. Ní Churreáin read from poems that recount the intergenerational grief of family separation and adoption loss, as well as the intimate ties of kinship that continue to sustain women’s lives in Ireland. Organized by English professors Sarah Townsend and Dan Mueller and History professor Caleb Richardson, the event was generously sponsored by the English Department and Creative Writing Program, University Libraries, Comhaltas New Mexico, and Culture Ireland.
