{"id":653,"date":"2016-11-07T10:34:56","date_gmt":"2016-11-07T17:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=653"},"modified":"2016-11-07T10:34:56","modified_gmt":"2016-11-07T17:34:56","slug":"lunch-with-nm-author-michael-mcgarrity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2016\/11\/07\/lunch-with-nm-author-michael-mcgarrity\/","title":{"rendered":"Lunch with NM Author Michael McGarrity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Diane Thiel, Director of Creative Writing,\u00a0 and Anita Obermeier, Chair of English,\u00a0arranged a lunch with novelist Michael McGarrity and the three winners of the Hillerman\/McGarrity scholarship: \u00a0Ana June, David O&#8217;Connor, and Camilla Schaaff-Allison. \u00a0McGarrity is a New Mexican\u00a0author and former law enforcement officer who has written a dozen crime and historical novels set in New Mexico. He\u00a0\u00a0attended UNM \u00a0for three years and graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor&#8217;s degree with distinction in English and Psychology. He also earned a master&#8217;s degree in clinical social work from the University of Iowa and is a graduate of the New Mexico Law Enforcement academy. In addition to law enforcement work, he has been an investigator and caseworker for the New Mexico Public Defender&#8217;s Office.\u00a0He worked on rehabilitating prison programs after the New Mexico State Penitentiary Riot\u00a0in 1980. McGarrity has taught at several colleges and universities, as well as at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.
