{"id":56,"date":"2016-04-05T11:33:31","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T17:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=56"},"modified":"2016-06-02T12:45:21","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T18:45:21","slug":"56","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2016\/04\/05\/56\/","title":{"rendered":"Nocentelli Awarded Fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carmen Nocentelli, UNM Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature, was recently selected as the winner of three highly-coveted fellowships for 2016-2017. She has elected to spend the year as a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folger.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Folger Shakespeare Library<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest collection of Shakespeareana and a premier repository of rare books and manuscripts from the early modern period (ca. 1500-1750).<\/p>\n<p>For Nocentelli, an expert in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature, a year in residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library is a priceless gift of time and support for her second book. To be titled Black Legends and the Invention of Europe, this work will explore the impact of xenophobic invective and jingoistic propaganda on the idea of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we say that there was no \u2018Europe\u2019 before the eighteenth century, it is often because we try to read history backward from the standpoint of the European Union. But \u2018Europe\u2019 and \u2018European Union\u2019 are not the same thing,\u201d Nocentelli said. \u201cFar from expressing a vision of unity and inclusion, \u2018Europe\u2019 emerged first and foremost as tool of division and exclusion. It is this paradox that my book will explore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nocentelli holds joint appointments in the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of English<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/fll.unm.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Foreign Languages<\/a>. Her first book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/15091.html\" target=\"_blank\">Empires of Love: Europe, Asia, and the Making of Early Modern Identity<\/a>, was awarded two top prizes in the field: the 2015 Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies from the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the 2014 Roland H.
