Jesse Alem\u00e1n and Bernadine Hern\u00e1ndez, along with Ren Heintz (CSU, Los Angeles), published a special issue of\u00a0<em>Trans Studies Quarterly\u00a0<\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/tsq\/issue\/13\/1?browseBy=volume\">TSQ 13.1<\/a>) focusing on the theoretical, critical, and analytical methodologies of trans studies in the long nineteenth-century Americas. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars, thinkers, teachers, and writers, the co-edited issue addresses some of the most pressing conversations in trans studies right now: namely, questions of the periodization of trans history; the politics of naming and gendered language; trans and its relationship to identity, as well as trans embodiment and racialization. Connecting trans studies to earlier historical moments, the issue pressures the relatively modern analytical limits of trans studies and opens up new opportunities for critical thought, especially in relation to the complexities of layered colonialities, the biopolitics of slavery, and the transnational intimacies that constituted and constructed the early Americas and continue to resonate across national borders.
