{"id":3638,"date":"2024-04-26T11:25:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T17:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=3638"},"modified":"2024-04-30T12:31:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T18:31:08","slug":"engl-dept-invites-nez-perce-author-and-scholar-to-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2024\/04\/26\/engl-dept-invites-nez-perce-author-and-scholar-to-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"English Department Invites Nez Perce Author and Scholar to Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A collaboration between UNM Creative Writing and The Institute for American Indian Research (IFAIR) recently brought Nez Perce author and scholar, Beth Piatote to campus for a reading and lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Piatote read selections from&nbsp;<em>The Beadworkers<\/em>, as part of the Russo Reading Series at Hodgin Hall on UNM Campus. The audience consisted of about forty people, from UNM and from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piatote additionally presented a scholarly lecture titled, &#8220;Translating Land Through Language.&#8221; The talk started with her work translating Emily Dickinson\u2019s poem, &#8220;To make a prairie,&#8221; into Nez Perce language and ended with an offering of prompts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What is a text you want to denaturalize\/reoccupy\/reconstruct?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;What does water know?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Introduce yourself to the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thought provoking and engaging, we are grateful to Piatote for her generosity in sharing her work with the UNM community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beth Piatote is an associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California Berkeley. She holds a PhD from Stanford University, is the author of numerous scholarly essays and creative works, and is the recipient of multiple awards and fellowships. She is the author of two books: the scholarly monograph&nbsp;<em>Domestic Subjects: Gender, Citizenship, and the Law in Native American Literature<\/em>&nbsp;(Yale 2013); and the mixed-genre collection,&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Beadworkers: Stories<\/em>&nbsp;(Counterpoint 2019).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A collaboration between UNM Creative Writing and The Institute for American Indian Research (IFAIR) recently brought Nez Perce author and scholar, Beth Piatote to campus for a reading and lecture.
