{"id":3436,"date":"2023-10-30T10:17:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-30T16:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=3436"},"modified":"2023-10-30T14:14:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-30T20:14:04","slug":"als-assistant-professor-invited-by-naisip-to-participate-in-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2023\/10\/30\/als-assistant-professor-invited-by-naisip-to-participate-in-event\/","title":{"rendered":"ALS Assistant Professor Invited by NAISIP to Participate in Event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sarah Hernandez,  Assistant Professor of American Literary Studies and the Director of the Institute for American Indian Research, was invited by the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative at Princeton (NAISIP) to participate in a virtual event titled, \u201cWe Are the Stars: Honoring Our Literary Ancestors,\u201d which is now <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ias.edu\/video\/we-are-stars-honoring-our-literary-ancestors\" target=\"_blank\">available online<\/a> for viewing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hernandez discussed her new book,&nbsp;<em>We Are the Stars: Colonizing and Decolonizing the Oceti Sakowin Literary Tradition&nbsp;<\/em>(University of Arizona Press and University of Regina Press).&nbsp;<em>We Are the Stars<\/em>&nbsp;is a literary recovery project that honors and celebrates Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota women writers such as Ella Cara Deloria, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, and many other storytellers and writers who have served as the Oceti Sakowin&#8217;s traditional culture keepers and culture bearers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hernandez\u2019s presentation was followed by a discussion with Dakota\/Lakota writer Diane Wilson, author of the award-winning book, <em>The Seed Keeper<\/em>. Both Hernandez and Wilson are long-time members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ocetisakowinwriterssociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oceti Sakowin Writers Society<\/a>\u00a0(formerly the Oak Lake Writers&#8217; Society), a-first-of-its-kind group for Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota writers.\u00a0\u00a0Established in 1993, the Society seeks to protect and defend Oceti Sakowin oral traditions, histories, and literatures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hernandez additionally attended the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sdhumanities.org\/sarah-hernandez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 South Dakota Festival of Books<\/a>\u00a0in Deadwood, South Dakota, and represented the state of South Dakota at the 2023 National Book Festival in Washington D.C. with her book, <em>We Are the Stars: Colonizing and Decolonizing the Oceti Sakowin Literary Tradition<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, the Library of Congress publishes a list of books,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/programs\/center-for-the-book\/great-reads-from-great-places\/#:~:text=Every%20year%2C%20a%20list%20of,during%20the%20National%20Book%20Festival.\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGreat Reads from Great Places,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that represents the literary heritage of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year, the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdhumanities.org\/happenings\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Dakota Humanities Council<\/a>\u00a0(SDHC) picked\u00a0<em>We Are the Stars<\/em>\u00a0as their state\u2019s selection for the LOC\u2019s National Book Festival. The SDHC streamed an interview with Hernandez that they posted online after the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We Are the Stars<\/em>&nbsp;is a literary recovery project that honors and celebrates Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota women writers such as Ella Cara Deloria, Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, and many other storytellers and writers who have long served as their tribes traditional culture keepers and culture bearers.
