{"id":3409,"date":"2023-09-05T11:17:09","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T17:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=3409"},"modified":"2023-09-05T11:17:09","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T17:17:09","slug":"als-professor-named-mellon-distinguished-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2023\/09\/05\/als-professor-named-mellon-distinguished-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"ALS Professor Named Mellon Distinguished Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Jesse Alem\u00e1n<\/strong>, ALS Professor and Interim Dean of Graduate Studies, has been named the 2023-2024 Mellon Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanantiquarian.org\/\">American Antiquarian Society (AAS)&nbsp;<\/a>in Worcester, MA. He will be the senior fellow in residence at the AAS, where he will participate in the social and academic program of the Society while conducting research in the library\u2019s archives of nineteenth-century US print cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alem\u00e1n has been serving as the Interim Dean of Graduate Studies since January 2023 semester. He will be stepping down from the position on July 31, 2023, when he will take sabbatical to begin his residency at the Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUNM is proud of Dr. Alem\u00e1n\u2019s accomplishments, and his residency at the AAS will provide him an unparalleled opportunity to advance his scholarship,\u201d said James Holloway, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cHis service to graduate studies has been admirable, and he has my deep thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1812, the American Antiquarian Society houses one of the oldest, largest, and most renown collection of manuscripts, books, newspapers, and other ephemera printed in the US before the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alem\u00e1n plans to the use the year and the library\u2019s resources to put the final touches on a book that analyzes Latino and Latina writings about the US Civil War. \u201cCovid disrupted the book\u2019s progress. Libraries and archives closed, and the pandemic shut down much of the world.
