{"id":3256,"date":"2023-04-11T12:21:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T18:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=3256"},"modified":"2023-04-12T12:37:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-12T18:37:41","slug":"associate-professor-awarded-poetry-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2023\/04\/11\/associate-professor-awarded-poetry-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Associate Professor Awarded Poetry Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Stephen Benz, Associate Professor of Professional Writing, has been awarded the 2022 Ron Rash Award in Poetry by the&nbsp;<em>Broad River Review&nbsp;<\/em>for his poem, &#8220;Uncle Jerry, Missing in Action.&#8221; The judge for the award was poet Virgil Suarez of Florida State University. Of Benz&#8217;s poem, Suarez said, &#8220;I could not forget this poem. The images, the lines, the way that the poem &#8216;poems&#8217; through with a great amount of detail and subtlety. There is maturity to the voice here, and a beautiful resonance with words.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Benz has published more than 20 poems during the past year, and furthermore published his fourth book of creative nonfiction,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/etruscanpress.org\/product\/reading-the-signs-by-stephen-benz\/\"><em>Reading the Signs and other itinerant essays<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(Etruscan Press).
