This series honors the years&#8217; best works in the field of creative nonfiction. Gurule received the mention in the book&#8217;s appendix for her essay &#8220;Exit Route,&#8221; initially written as part of her MFA dissertation and published in issue 53 of the literary magazine&nbsp;<em>StoryQuarterly<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Exit Route,&#8221; which won&nbsp;<em>StoryQuarterly<\/em>&#8216;s nonfiction prize alongside the notable mention in &#8220;Best American Essays,&#8221; concerns Gurule&#8217;s father and grandmother as well as her attempt to escape her work at the time as a sugar baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gurule is currently in the editing process of the larger memoir, which she hopes to have completed for shopping to publishers in spring 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Exit Route&#8221; can be read on&nbsp;<em>StoryQuarterly<\/em>&#8216;s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyquarterly.org\/exit-route.html\">website<\/a>. &#8220;The Best American Essays 2022&#8221; is available wherever books are sold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNM alumna Michelle Gurule received a notable mention in Harper Collins&#8217; most recent edition of their annual &#8220;Best American Essays&#8221; series.
