Our deep gratitude to Karen McKinnon for her generous gift which funds this annual award. And many thanks to our faculty judges, Stephen Benz, Feroza Jussawalla, and Sharon Oard Warner as well as to our Contest Coordinator, Diane Thiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1<sup>st<\/sup>Place prize went to<strong>Benjamin Tab\u00e1\u010dek <\/strong>for \u201cHomesick\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"273\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ben-mckinnon-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ben-mckinnon-2022.jpg 273w, https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ben-mckinnon-2022-164x300.jpg 164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin Tab\u00e1\u010dek is a poet, artist, and writer from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is currently attending the University of New Mexico and pursuing a degree in English Studies. He is the author of two poetry collections and a novel and is currently preparing them for publication. His work has been featured in <em>Limina Nonfiction Review<\/em> and <em>Scribendi Literature and Arts Magazine<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2<sup>nd<\/sup>Place prize went to<strong>Ariel Menendez <\/strong>for \u201cLa Chicana\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"283\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ariel-mckinnon-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ariel-mckinnon-2022.jpg 283w, https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ariel-mckinnon-2022-183x300.jpg 183w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ariel Menendez is a first-year undergraduate at the University of New Mexico. She is currently double majoring in Chicano\/a Studies and English\/Creative Writing, with a minor in Spanish. She enjoys singing in her spare time along with spending time with her family and friends, drawing, and thrift shopping.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3<sup>rd<\/sup>Place prize went to<strong>Indica Simpson<\/strong>for \u201cR\u00e9sum\u00e9\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"320\" height=\"463\" src=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/indica-mckinnon-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/indica-mckinnon-2022.jpg 320w, https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/indica-mckinnon-2022-207x300.jpg 207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Indica Simpson is a senior originally from Fallon, Nevada. Her major is in Conflict, Peace, and Diplomacy in Asia and the Middle East; along with a double minor in Arabic and Peace and Justice Studies. She is the editor in chief of\u00a0<em>Limina: UNM Nonfiction Review<\/em>\u00a0and this is her first time trying her hand at poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest winners were additionally featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailylobo.com\/article\/2022\/05\/mckinnon-poetry-contest-winners-navigate-identity-origins-through-poetry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an article<\/a> in the Daily Lobo discussing navigating their identities and origins through poetry.
