{"id":160,"date":"2016-05-03T14:21:10","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T20:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=160"},"modified":"2016-06-02T11:41:19","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T17:41:19","slug":"doaa-omran-receives-graduate-deans-dissertation-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2016\/05\/03\/doaa-omran-receives-graduate-deans-dissertation-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Doaa Omran Receives Graduate Dean&#8217;s Dissertation Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Doaa Omran, PhD Candidate for\u00a0British and Irish Literary Studies, has received the\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Graduate Dean&#8217;s Dissertation Fellowship, a year-long, full-time fellowship intended to\u00a0provide one year of financial assistance to students nearing completion of a terminal (PhD, EdD, or MFA) degree.\u00a0Her\u00a0dissertation is on female hero archetypes-an area that haven\u2019t been explored in great\u00a0detail, with a focus on two medieval comparable genres: the Arabic <em>sira,<\/em> and its European counterpart, the romance. She compares the different versions of Arthurian romances from England, Germany, and France with the Arabic <em>siras<\/em> of <em>Sayf Bin Dhi Yazan<\/em> and <em>The Princess of High Resolve, <\/em>which are two\u00a0works that haven\u2019t been completely translated into English. Through her comparison, she is able to broaden the scope and analyze nine prominent archetypes that constitute female heroism in both traditions. In doing so, Omran ultimately aspires to offer an explanation on how female heroism functions and whether it is just another face of male heroism. Her research theorizes the two problematic terms: archetype and motif. Moreover, Omran believes\u00a0that\u00a0her research will place her\u00a0findings within the more prominent studies of Joseph Campbell, Lord Raglan and S.
