{"id":1299,"date":"2018-03-22T12:00:52","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T18:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/?p=1299"},"modified":"2018-03-22T13:56:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T19:56:28","slug":"assistant-professor-publishes-article-on-writers-and-their-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.unm.edu\/blog\/blog\/2018\/03\/22\/assistant-professor-publishes-article-on-writers-and-their-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Assistant Professor Publishes Article on Writers and Their Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cristyn Elder published, &#8220;Dear OWL Mail: Centering Writers\u2019 Concerns in Online Tutor Preparation&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writingcenterjournal.org\/\"><em>The Writing Center Journal <\/em><\/a>, a journal &#8220;committed to publishing strong empirical research and theoretical scholarship relevant to writing centers [and] build[ing] a stronger research community for writing centers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Elder&#8217;s article discusses an empirical study\u00a0 conducted in an effort to bring writers&#8217; voices to the forefront.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s the abstract:<\/p>\n<p>Much of the scholarship on writing centers narrates the stories of writers<br \/>\nand their texts as told by tutors, administrators, and researchers. In an<br \/>\neffort to bring writers\u2019 voices to the forefront, this empirical study<br \/>\nexamines the types of questions and concerns writers have about their<br \/>\nwriting as submitted through the Purdue Writing Lab\u2019s OWL Mail, an<br \/>\nonline, asynchronous question-and-answer email platform. Through the<br \/>\nemployment of what Richard H. Haswell (2005) calls RAD research\u2014<br \/>\nthat which is replicable, aggregable, and data-supported\u2014thousands<br \/>\nof users\u2019 inquiries, submitted from 2006 to 2010, were analyzed and<br \/>\ntaxonomized into six primary question categories\u2014Documentation<br \/>\nStyle, Grammar, Beyond the Scope of OWL Mail, Punctuation, Genre,<br \/>\nand Lexicon\u2014plus Other. The implications of these results and the ways<br \/>\nthey may inform tutor preparation in response to writers\u2019 email inquiries<br \/>\nare discussed.
