Professor Publishes on Revising Race in Laʒamon’s Brut

Associate Professor of Medieval Studies, Jonathan Davis-Secord recently published an article in the Journal of English and Germanic Philology , a Medieval Studies Journal that focuses on Northern European literatures of the Middle Ages, covering Medieval English, Germanic, and Celtic Studies.

Dr. Davis-Secord contributed, “Revising Race in Laȝamon’s Brut.” JEGP 116 (2017): 156–81. In the introduction, Davis-Secord writes:

The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 led ultimately to radical changes both historically and linguistically, but these changes unfolded only gradually over the following centuries. The English language, although put into temporary political decline by the conquest, remained a living, functioning language, and the validity of a strong disjunction separating Old English and early Middle English has come under question again recently…Laʒamon’s Brut, originally composed near the beginning of the thirteenth century but only extant in manuscripts produced in the second half of that century, constitutes an important witness to these linguistic and cultural changes.

The article can be found in full at Project Muse, which is an online database that aggregates and provides e-access to a variety of journals.
